GAB Africa
The GAB Regional Secretariat for Africa is hosted in Kampala, Uganda by the Association of Women Engineers, Scientists and Technicians in Uganda (WETSU). WETSU was formed by a group of women in 1989 to promote the participation of girls and women in Engineering, Scientific and Technological education and work, is hosting the Gender Advisory Board (GAB) Africa Region Secretariat. WETSU is a non-government, non-profit making organisation registered with the Ugandan NGO Board.
The GAB Africa Secretariat also hosts the central GAB Secretariat.
The vision of GAB Africa is "Science and Technology Serving the Women and Men of Africa".
Its mission is to collaborate with governments and other stakeholders on matters of Gender, Science and Technology for Sustainable Human Development in the Africa region.
The goal of Africa Region is to improve the quality of life of both women and men in the Africa region through promotion of women's participation in Gender, Science and Technology (G, S & T) for Sustainable Human Development.
Objectives:
- Promote at policymaking level the gender dimension in Science and Technology (S & T) activities and decisions by use of corresponding channels with the national Governments and regional organs involved in Gender, Science and Technology (G, S & T) issues in accordance with the UNCSTD Gender Working Group's recommendations;
- Stimulate, guide and facilitate the national processes of establishing ad hoc committees that will review the national situations and formulate action plans regarding G, S & T;
- Build capacity in the management and use of Information Communication and Technologies (ICTs);
- Promote improvement of the situation of women at diverse levels of S & T activities in the region.
To date, National Committees have been established in four countries:
- Kenya, based in the National Council for Science and Technology
- Rwanda, based in the Minstry of Gender and Women in Development
- Tanzania, based in the national Commission on Science and Technology
- Uganda, based in the Ministry of Education and Sports

Regional Gender, Science and Technology Secretariat for Southeast Asia (RESGEST)
The Secretariat is hosted by the Indonesia Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the UNESCO Office in Jakarta. The connections with these organizations provide strong links into policy, research and grassroots networks in the region.
The goals of activity in the region are to:
- Promote the understanding of women's role in science and technology for poverty reduction and national development
- Promote activities to support and increase women's contributions to S&T.
- Work with policy makers and national level stakeholders from government, research institutions and NGOs to promote the gender dimension of S&T for poverty reduction and national development.
- To facilitate plans of action at regional and national levels towards these goals.
RESGEST is affiliated with the Asia-Pacific Network on Gender, Science and Technology (APGEST), a UNDP-UNESCO initiative. APGEST is a component of the Asia-Pacific Gender Equality Network, falling under its goal to use science and technology for women's economic empowerment and poverty reduction.
Work in the region seeks to redress the effects on women at all socio-economic levels of lack of benefit from science and technology. It is oriented around two premises:
- Women have the right to share in the benefits of scientific and technological innovation, and to shape science and technology to respond to their interests and needs; and
- A new compact recognizing the complex interweaving of science and technology with society and culture is needed to produce a science and technology open to all sectors of society and oriented to the service of all humanity, i.e. to equitable and sustainable development.
Work is informed by the recognition that it is women who have faced and continue to face discrimination and barriers to development of their capacities to be actively involved in localizing scientific and technological innovations to improve their lives; to participation in science-based careers; to science education; and to participate in shaping technological changes in their communities.
The GAB Secretariat coordinates a regional network of national focal points which developed a programme of collection of gender-disaggregated data at the national level. This data is to be used to support lobby efforts with national governments in the region.
Two national committees are in process of establishment, in Indonesia and the Philippines; with plans to establish committees in Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
